We’ve all heard it — “Your metabolism slows down after 40.”
But here’s the thing… that’s only half true. And I’m about to tell you the bit no one explains properly.
💬 First, let’s clear up the myth
A big international study published in Science (2021) looked at thousands of people aged from babies to 95 years old. They found that your metabolism — the number of calories your body burns to keep you alive — stays surprisingly stable from your 20s right up to your 50s!
So no, your metabolism doesn’t suddenly fall off a cliff just because you’ve had a few birthdays 🎂
💪 The real reason it feels slower
As we get older, we naturally lose muscle (that’s called sarcopenia).
And muscle is your body’s metabolic engine — it burns more calories, even when you’re resting.
Less muscle = less energy burned = “my metabolism feels slower.”
Add in less daily movement, more sitting, and a few hormonal changes… and there you have it — not a broken metabolism, just a body that needs a little strength boost!

You can absolutely turn this around.
Here’s what keeps your metabolism firing:
